Growing up, I went to a Catholic School in Queens. I had the same class for 9 years in a row and we all became very, very close. One of my favorite times of the day… NATURALLY… was recess. My school didn’t have a playground – which was unfortunate. We basically used the church parking lot as our space to roam free.
The teachers did what they could with our time though. Each corner had a new activity to participate in and they rotated in new games every so often. It was always so fun to run out and see what new task was waiting for you. Whether it be chalk drawing competitions, volleyball, tag races, or Red Rover – I knew that some excitement was waiting for me after lunch.
Children need this time during school to let out any excess energy they’ve built up throughout the day and recess is the place to let it all out. We – as a society – have become lazy. It’s not our fault really. Most jobs require us to site behind a desk and in front of a computer. A hard days work really means pounding down on a keyboard – not the manual labor our ancestors were used to.
However, we still NEED to stay active and we still NEED to teach our children to be active. Recess does just that. It reminds them it’s ok to run and play and have fun with your friends. No texting allowed!
In the past twenty years, children have lost an average of 8 hours of recess a week.
