My Feet Are Killing Me And My Vision Is Blurred: 4 Things You Need To Remember When Vacationing

If it isn’t obvious by now, I’m on the Disney Fantasy Cruise’s Inaugural Launch. I’m having an insanely awesome time, but am learning quite a few lessons along the way. Figured I’d post them just in case you were getting ready to pack for a family getaway.

Motion Sickness:

My neurologist TOLD me to NOT do the patch. He said there was NO REASON why I should be on medication for three days in a row and suggested instead for me to take Meclizine pills whenever I felt unbalanced. Now, as some of you know, I have benign positional vertigo and I was SUPER nervous about boarding the Disney Fantasy. I came with everything you can imagine. The patch, sea bands, Dramanine, dizzy pills etc. etc. etc. I have more drugs in this room than clothes.

Well, some people unfortunately suffer through side effects while wearing the patch. I was one of them. Besides being tired (which was manageable if I’m being honest), my vision became blurred. It was the strangest thing! I couldn’t look at my computer screen or phone without getting really dizzy and unfocused. It progressively got worse as the days passed. Finally, I ripped the patch off and am just dealing with whatever imbalance happens head on.

And PS – I flew down to Florida. The water down here is MUCH calmer than the water around NY. The next time I cruise, I won’t use the patch. I’m just going to make sure that the port I leave from is S-O-U-T-H.

One more note about the patch – it gave me cotton mouth. I was constantly thirsty and no matter how much I drank, I couldn’t get that feeling off my tongue. It was the strangest sensation. Another reason why I’m going to stick to the pills my next time out.

My Poor Little Toes:

I brought flip flops with me as my shoe of choice. When packing, I opted against anything with a heel thinking I was doing myself a favor. I just brought 2 pairs of flip flops and 2 pairs of flats. That’s not a lot for me… I’m a packaholic to say the least.

Well, the flip flops I own have a band between my big toe and my… second big toe. And that area is really hurting. My advice to you is to not bring flip flops with the band between your toes. Buy flat sandals where you foot actually just slips into the shoe. Gladiators are a great example of a nice looking sandal that won’t give you problems.

And if you plan on walking a lot… I hate to say it… but consider bringing a pair of sneakers. UGH. I’m so not that girl!!! I just emailed my husband to let him know that I will probably be in sneakers the rest of the week until my feet heal. If only I could wear my Uggs until then. But unfortunately, that would look ridiculous. 🙂

A Mini Beach Bag:

Ok folks. You need to bring 2 different bags with you while traveling. One for every day use and one for beach / pool time. Didn’t think this one through and when I went to the beach today, I had to bring a ZIPLOC bag with my sunscreen because I didn’t want to bring my real purse onto the sand. So, run to Target and get a cheap bag that you can throw around while by water and not feel guilty about it.

A hat:

Again, 360 days out of the year, you will NOT see me in a hat. But right before I boarded this ship, I bought a $10 cap to wear so I can shield my face from the sun. I might look a little crazy (having my head under an umbrella with a hat on and sunglasses) but I don’t have any sunspots or excessive wrinkles on my face. And 20 years from now, I will be thankful I made this decision. Hide your face! Your skin is so much more sensitive up there and no tan is worth the after effects.

That’t it’s folks. Life returns back to normal tomorrow. Can’t wait to see my babies! Do you have any travel tips you’d like to share?

  1. thanks for some great travel trips…hat is very importantbecause you don;t realize how strong that sun light is

  2. I am totally with you on the sneakers (the “Jerry Seinfeld”look my husband calls it) which is why when I know I’m going to be walking a lot I travel with clogs (I know, not everyone’s favorite look, either) or Keens!

  3. I love those shoes you have shown. I’m not even a shoe fanatic…but those are very cute.

  4. I am a true proponent of the patch. Yes, I get blurred vision. Yes, I get cotton mouth. BUT, I would much rather have those two symptoms than feel nauseous and sea-sick throughout my whole cruise vacation. On a side note, the blurred vision only happens on the third day and it is only blurry when you are trying to focus on something really close.
