Square Foot Gardening: Oh It’s Happening

In March, I wrote about my desire to have a Greenhouse. It never ended up happening – despite all my nagging. My husband didn’t want to deal with putting the structure together. He also thought I would let this one go if he ignored me longe enough.

Silly Bill.

I’ve been wanting to grow a backyard vegetable garden for some time now – a friend of mine starting using a local plot in town last year and loves it. My partner Audrey’s husband took it to the extreme and blew out half of his backyard. I also have several other neighbors that grow tomatoes, peppers and onions. It makes so much sense!

Seeds are $1 a packet and you get hundreds! They last up to 5 years (if store properly). Think of all the money we will be saving. And imaging cooking sauce using only the vegetables and herbs that you grew with your family? Come on!

So, the family and I headed to Home Depot last night. I figured everything I needed would be there. I messed up a little on my seed selection. Have to go back today and correct my choices. After we got home, I spent some time on the Internet and realized I should be revving up for Fall vegetables right now. I missed the mark with Spring.

There are a few great sites like Mother Earth News that lets you know what you should plant each month. Yes, I researched for about 3 hours yesterday.

Also bought a book on Matt’s recommendation (Audrey’s husband). All New Square Foot Gardening. Basically – it teaches you to move away from old farming tactics and to maximize the amount of product per square foot of planting space. The philosophy reduces a family’s plot to 20% of what one typically would need in order to feed / can for the year.  I will write more about this later.

All New Square Foot Gardening doesn’t suggest buying Miracle Gro… but honestly I had no desire to play around with a compost mix. I’m not there yet – so this will do. :)

It’s pouring right now!! I’m hoping it will stop. We bought 2 4x4x8 raised beds that Bill is going to put together today and we plan on planting:

  • Carrots
  • Tomatoes (I bought 3 plants since I missed Spring)
  • Basil (same – bought 3 plants)
  • Rosemary (same – 3 plants)
  • Leeks
  • Cucumbers
  • Summer Squash
  • Onions

I have to head back to the store to get Lettuce, Arugula, Beans and Brussel Sprouts.

Lots of videos and pictures to come.
