I’m Allergic To Pepperoni

I’m Allergic To Pepperoni. WHAT IS HAPPENING TO ME???? I CAN’T TAKE THIS ANYMORE!

I'm Allergic To Pepperoni

Did I ever write the post about being allergic to red wine? I don’t think I did. I wrote all about it on Facebook and was so sick of it all that I never brought it over to the blog.

Basically – LONG STORY SHORT – during my trip to Napa last month, I learned that I was allergic to red wine. We made an educated guess that it was probably the sulfites that were triggering my hive outbreaks.

I’m Allergic To Pepperoni

Well, that’s easy. I don’t particularly LIKE red wine. Problem solved – I’ll stick to white or champagne. Boom.

Three days ago, I didn’t feel like cooking dinner and I decided to instead make an antipasto for dinner. I do this ALL THE TIME. I cut up vegetables, cheese, pepperoni, salami, and pair it all with crackers and olives. Everyone picks until they are full and I never turn my oven on. BLISS.

I overindulged in the pepperoni. Not going to lie. Kept eating it because I love it and honestly… I thought nothing of it.

Well, my neck swelled with hives within minutes. My ears turned reds. My lips got plump. And something new happened — the bags under my eyes and the area under my cheeks right next to my nostrils became very itchy. In other words, my entire face became one big hive.

What? Pepperoni? Can’t be! I’ve eaten pepperoni my entire life. What could POSSIBLY be doing this? F-R-E-A-K-I-N-G SULFITES NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Three days later, I look like a drug addict. I keep scratching my neck and cheeks. I’m not even sure if people are noticing what I am doing because the inflammation has certainly gone down but the irritation still exists.

And not to get graphic — but it’s even gone down to my chest and stomach a bit. This one certainly affected me a lot worse than the wine. My goodness.

Pizza Pie Casserole

I am devastated. DEVASTATED. Losing pepperoni (and I assume salami too) is a HUGE loss for this Italian. It’s one of my favorite things to cook with – like HELLO! My pizza pie casserole.  I can’t take this.

After having Caleb, so much has changed for me. It’s like I’m walking on a tightrope when it comes to food lately. I can’t win. Insert sad itchy face here.

So...after reading your post on FB about the sulfates and the wine I realized that I think I am having an issue with sulfites too,but for me it is a reaction to vinegar...

I couldn't figure out why my neck and face were always itchy and why when I would eat vinegar based foods I would get all red and break out into a cold sweat until I read your post and starting putting two and two together.

Thanks for cluing me in....

You might want to do some reading up on all the foods and beverages that contain sulfites so you don't have any more surprises. There are so many foods you shouldn't eat - and many that you might not even think of! I have a friend with an intolerance/allergy and the list of things she can't have is endless! Any type of wines, processed meats (bacon, pepperoni, etc), dried fruits, lemon juice, gravy, and on and on and on. Even pickles and certain cheeses. Some medications even have them (and strangely the epi-pens have some!)
