Visiting The Grand Canyon And Feeling Very Small

A few weeks ago, I headed out to Arizona for a photo shoot at the Grand Canyon with SheKnows.com. The footage isn’t quite ready just yet… it’s on the way I promise, but I still wanted to talk about the experience.

I lugged my huge Canon 70D all the way across country and then FORGOT it when we traded cars to drive closer to the canyons. You have no idea how upset I was. These shots were taken on my iPhone. It is what it is… but know that I was borderline hysterical.

Visiting The Grand Canyon And Feeling Very Small

When I first arrived, I was shocked to see that there were NO BORDERS or BOUNDARIES. Basically, you go to the edge of the cliff and you take your shots. I couldn’t handle it, so I got down on the floor for my first photo. I have vertigo and was afraid that I was going to lose my mind.

If you are wondering about wind – don’t worry – there isn’t any. No immediate gust is going to take you away. At least, there wasn’t any on the day that I visited.

In fact, the locals told me that the reason why hot air balloon rides are offered in Arizona is because of their calm weather and wind patterns. Go figure.

As the day progressed, I had to get up the courage to STAND near the edge of death and just do what I had to do. I had a Fitbit on and my heart rate was actually a stead 120-125.

That is not a joke. The film crew kept asking me to check it because they thought it was a little funny that I was so afraid.

I knew that I wouldn’t exactly slip. I was more nervous that the dozens of people behind us would back into us while trying to take a selfie and push me into an untimely death. At least they would have gotten their shot though…

By the end of the day…. this happened. I didn’t vomit in case you were wondering. Maybe I did a little on the inside… but there’s no actual proof of that so yeah.

But in all seriousness… the Grand Canyon was an absolute wonder. When I finally made it on the Skywalk, it felt very spiritual to me. I felt a presence surrounding me – and energy if you will.

And noticing how small I was compared to this one canyon made me realize that there is so many other things going on in this world besides my little problems. We are just tiny pieces to a much bigger puzzle.

I felt connected to it all. I felt thankful for it all. I felt part of something larger than life and I didn’t need to necessarily do anything while I was out on the Skywalk.

I just watched the eagles flying BELOW me. I tried to see out as far as my human eye allowed me and I took in the energy that my body was very aware of. I almost started crying. It was very powerful.

I couldn’t cry obviously because I was being filmed and they were looking for a very different reaction at that point but I will tell you that there is something waiting for you at the Grand Canyon.

Everyone should go there to find it. I am so thankful that I had the chance to experience it and I cannot wait to take my kids when they are all a bit older.

I’m not sure they would appreciate the message at 3, 8 and 10. Maybe I’m wrong. But I feel like once they are a bit older, it will be a more powerful experience for us all.

And just a note!!! There are helicopter rides that you can take to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. I would highly recommend budgeting for that experience.

How cool! We didn’t have time to get down there but WOW! I absolutely want to give that a shot the next time I return.
