Jenny Craig has changed my life!

How is that for a post opening?! No, seriously!

Just today, I went out with a friend to one of our favorite lunch spots and as I was on the line waiting to order my food, I was checking calories and trying to figure out how I could get closest to what I normally eat while at home and on Jenny Craig food.

Something has shifted in my brain and simply become automatic and because of this… I’ve lost ten pounds*! Yippee! I am now ready to start exercising.

I did it guys!

By following the Jenny Craig plan, discussing long term goals with my consultant and really committing to a better version of me, I decided to take back my life. In fact, several friends of mine in town have signed up as well. We are all doing it together – including my husband who – to date – has lost over 30 pounds and counting*. The Jenny Craig program is designed to provide structure and support to help members lose weight and learn how to keep it off. It provides nutritionally balanced menus, which include more than 100 delicious entrees, desserts, and snacks developed by dietitians, nutritionists, and professional chefs along with one-on-one personal support from a consultant. After several weeks on board, I can now say that I am ten pounds lighter* and ten times smarter when it comes to food.

Here’s the truth.

I am the girl who sits in front of the TV with a big bowl of her favorite chips and munches away until she gets to the end of the bowl and then wonders who ate all the chips. I literally don’t remember eating them.  Ever see that joke in a movie and think, “that’s not real – people don’t actually LIVE LIKE THAT!”

Well, they do –  and I am one of them! Or, I guess you can say I WAS one of them. I no longer mindlessly do anything. I am very aware of everything that I do and eat and say. It’s all about my temple – my body and mind.

And I suppose that is my first lesson learned from Jenny Craig – stop mindlessly living.  Not just eating – I’m going all the way and claiming “living.”

I think the Jenny Craig program has opened my eyes a bit. It’s enabled me to accept there are consequences to my actions and no, I don’t “deserve” everything I want at any given time. That was my biggest excuse. I had a tough day at work – so that meant that I deserved some greasy fries. What? How does that make any sense? Every action brings on a reaction and then a consequence. That goes for food and for relationships. Move forward with purpose.

Portion Control is a Thing and It is Super Important: WHAT? Fist sizes for meats and all that jazz. I had NO CLUE walking into my very first meeting. But after seeing each and every meal that I ate on the program, I began to be able to eyeball exactly what I was supposed to be eating throughout the day. This was the life changer for me. The calories are listed on every product that Jenny Craig sells.

That combined with the portion size really helped me mentally get a grasp on LIFE. I didn’t have to worry about converting anything to points. I just knew about what size I needed to eat and about what caloric intake I need to stick to per meal. I used these tools when I was out of the house and away from my Jenny Craig menu. This helped me during my transition days – the days of the week where I was off the plan after I hit my midway point.

The plan is to never stay on the program forever. Once you hit your midway point, and depending on your comfort level, your consultant works with you to start building in meals on your own into your week.  I really enjoyed this process because I did have my ups and downs – not going to lie – but it was great to have my consultant to fall back on.

Drinking Your Calories Really Add Up: Bye-bye sugary drinks that provide no true benefit! What was I thinking drinking all that soda, juice and lemonade on any given day? We calculated how much Starbucks I was taking in on a regular basis and it was 600 calories a DAY. A DAY, people! That is bananas!!! The very first thing I did when I got on the Jenny Craig program was switch up my drink to an unsweetened green tea. Now, no matter where I go, I grab an unsweetened tea and am better for it! Zero calories and a thinner waist.

No Sacrificing: I think this was my favorite part of the ride. Jenny Craig’s menu includes premium entrees, snacks, and desserts, which are perfectly portioned and are developed by more than 40 professional chefs for superior taste. I didn’t have to stop eating anything. I had lemon cookies, apple crumble, cinnamon buns, waffles and… well, you get the point. It wasn’t all salad and kale. In fact, I hardly ate any salad and I still lost the ten pounds*! I’m just not a salad girl and that’s ok when you do Jenny Craig. You just have to know how to stay within your range and get enough of each of the food groups. I can’t tell you how many trips I took and how many dinner dates I went on with friends and I never felt funny. You just make adjustments and learn to live a bit differently.

It’s Possible: I think this was the most rewarding takeaway of all from Jenny Craig – it’s truly possible to do it. Like I said, I haven’t started to fully exercise yet and that is my very next step. For now, ten pounds down because of diet changes alone. I feel pretty good about that. I’m not stopping here either. I think I could lose another 5 if I continue on this path and, why wouldn’t I? I feel so good about myself and I am finally taking care of my body after three kids and eleven years. 40 is just a few months away and I hope to be running by November. That’s my next goal, but one day at a time. I will continue to reach for the stars because anything is possible.
