A Visit To Avon’s Research And Development Facility To Learn About Their Lotus Shield

I visited Avon’s Research and Development facility in Suffern, NY and learned about their newest haircare product, the Lotus Shield. I also went on a tour of the building and saw the inside workings of how they make some of their coolest products. Avon is over 125 years old and they pride themselves on providing high quality products that are also super affordable. Avon’s Research and Development Facility is where all the real magic happens. Scientists test every aspect of the product, including how well they stand up to shipping conditions to ensure that consumers are satisfied with what they get.

The tour was mainly focused on Avon’s Advanced Techniques Frizz Control Lotus Shield. This is a lightweight leave-in formula that combats frizz by dispelling humidity. What’s unique about this is that one application can last through 3 washes! The lotus leaf was the inspiration behind this product because it never absorbs water. Moisture just rolls right off the leaf. Avon basically mimicked the properties of the leaf and tested it in controlled conditions in their high-humidity rooms (we saw one of these rooms and no-one dared go in, it was so humid!) as well as with women in different parts of the country and of different nationalities. Avon’s high humidity rooms can mimic rain-forest-like conditions for testing, as well. Scientists also showed us how the water rolls off the hair, when the Lotus Shield is applied to it.

Besides getting a thorough tour of everything to do with the Lotus Shield, we also visited the Color Lab, where they mix colors for makeup, the Hair Evaluation Lab, where they simulate conditions like vigorous shaking of the head to test products (for the head-bangers among us), the Hair Salon, where hair stylists test the products on real women and the Color Library, where TONS of colors are cataloged for easy retrieval when deciding on trends. The building itself was so beautiful! With glass walls and beautiful images, like lipsticks and fashion faces emblazoned on the inside walls, Avon makes sure their scientists have a fun place to work.
My favorite room was the Think Tank. It looked like a tank, except the furniture was gently colored and conducive to conversation. Our tour guide told us they have meetings there. How cool! We also got a chance to see other products that are hitting the market, like nail polish that you peel off and stick on and lipstick and lipgloss in one tube.

Avon Tours The Country Giving Free Blow Outs To Women

The Avon hair team has been touring the country, telling women everywhere about the new Lotus Shield Frizz Control. The team includes Tippi Shorter, a celebrity stylist who works with Alicia Keys, Fantasia, Rihanna and Michelle Williams, to name a few. Tippi has been working with hair for over 15 years. They have been traveling in the CosmoBus, which is a bus with glass walls and a mini hair salon, complete with a sink, running water and electricity. Don’t ask me how they got running water on a bus. The team made their last stop in NYC this week and parked at Union Square to give free blowouts to women and show them how the Lotus Shield works.

When I arrived, it was past 8pm at night and the ladies were still rearing to go. While I chatted with Tippi about the tour, Andrea blew my hair out. See the video for her thoughts on the Lotus Shield. The Lotus Shield was applied after it was washed. See the before and after pictures. I couldn’t believe that the product could actually tame my frizz.

Interesting tidbit about Tippi: She recently returned from the south of France, where she did Alicia Keys’ hair for her wedding. They went with a big, sleek bun at the lower back of her head, accented by a jewel-encrusted hair piece.

Why Didn’t I Have This When I Had Newborns?

My niece, Layla, is growing out of her swaddling phase so when I saw Soothe TIME’s Snooze Wrap and Snooze Sheet, I got excited. Soothe TIME is dedicated to helping parents and babies find sleeping solutions. I found out swaddling mimics the coziness of the womb, hence the reason babies love it. Its important, though, to allow them space to get used to their limbs so tight swaddling may not be the best thing past 3 months.

Soothe TIME’s Snooze Wrap is the perfect solution for this phase. Its a wrapping blanket that is also designed to support the baby’s back and head. Its adjustable so you can use it as the baby grows. Its also super easy to use. Each panel has soft velcro at the end so it snaps gently in place. This is perfect for babies that need to go to the babysitter’s or grandma’s. Its very easy to figure out and put together. The Snooze Wrap also allows you to leave the baby’s arms out, if desired. I’ve noticed that the back of Layla’s head is flat and, apparently, this is a problem that is sending many babies to therapy. Because the baby spends so much time lying down, the back of the head can stay in that shape. The Snooze Wrap has a donut shaped support pad where the baby’s head goes, thus addressing this issue.

The Snooze Wrap also comes with a Snooze Sheet. Its a basic crib sheet with a softer fabric center so no-one taking care of the baby has to guess where to place the baby, for safe sleeping.

These are all available for less than $20 at your local Babies-R-Us.
