Beauty Buffs Can Now Make A Difference With Unilever’s “Rinse. Recycle. Reimagine.” Program #ReimagineThat

“How much product can one person own?”

Have you ever heard anything so offensive? I mean, I think all beauty fanatics can agree… the answer is “never enough”! I am a lotions and potions kind of girl and have been since I can remember. My husband, Bill, just doesn’t understand the concept.  Plus…. it’s mah j-o-b! Can I own that as a beauty blogger? You know it! When I come home with the 40th nighttime serum my defense is… “it’s for the blog”.

Boom. I win.

That being said, that’s a lot of plastic bottles at the end of the year that I have to dispose. My family is all about recycling and while most Americans know they can recycle shampoo and body wash bottles from their bathroom, less than half do. That’s crazy…it’s so easy to recycle! I actually live in a town that is VERY STRICT with policy and fines you if you don’t follow suit. You know what? I’m happy about that! Because there are so many Americans that don’t recycle their bathroom bottles, over 29 million tons of plastic fill landfills each year. That’s just way too much, people.

Confusion, misinformation… and a bit of skepticism is a big part of why we see this happening. While the majority of Americans know where they should be putting their empty bottles:

  • 42% claim that they don’t recycle because they aren’t sure an item is eligible for recycling
  • 25% are not convinced that their recycled items can actually become something new
  • 22% wouldn’t walk across their home to recycle a bath or beauty bottle.

In an attempt to combat this and better inform the public, Unilever – the maker of products including Dove®, Suave®, St. Ives®, Caress® and many more (400 brands spanning 14 categories of home, personal care and foods products) – is launching Rinse. Recycle. Reimagine.a new program in partnership with Keep America Beautiful and the Ad Council designed to educate people about recycling in the bathroom, inspire them to reimagine what empty bathroom products could become through recycling, and ultimately make a small change that holds big potential to positively impact the environment.

We’ve placed a recycle bin in the bathroom just as a friendly reminder that it’s not only good to recycle all that bathroom product when it’s finished, but it’s just so easy to do, too!! We remind them that the empty, rinsed bottle, is not just an empty bottle…no, no, no. Those empty bath and beauty bottles can take on new life and return as hairbrushes, backpacks or even backyard play sets!!I also try to buy the types of plastic that can be recycled when I’m shopping. These small steps are setting us all on the right path.

But don’t only take my word for it!!! Check out what Viners Meagan Cignoli and Zach King can do with all of these recycled bottles and see even more fun stuff from Zach on YouTube!!

Amazing videos, right? Doesn’t it inspire you to do even more?? Are you ready to try and make even more of a change? Unilever needs help from everyone in America to make this change a reality, and is asking people nationwide to step up and join the bathroom recycling movement.
