Sleep is everything to me. I’m one of those people that can feel the true effects of sleep deprivation when I have a crazy night. Sleepless and exhausted – we all know what it looks like, right? Bags under your eyes. Hair undone. That dragging shuffle. It almost feels like we are simply pulling through the day just to get back to bed in order to correct what was missed.
A good night’s sleep is the foundation of a great day ahead. I teamed up with Sleep Number to bring you a list of 9 things I miss out on while suffering from sleep deprivation. Unfortunately, it was so easy to do because I’ve felt it a thousand times in my life!
9 Things I Miss Out On When I Don’t Get A Good Night’s Sleep
I’m not very good to my family when I am sleep deprived. This means that everything falls on my husband’s shoulders. I literally can’t handle my responsibilities and shut down. Like I said earlier, sleep deprivation hits me HARD and if I had a sleepless night the day before, everyone is on their own. So, in some ways, I miss being a mom and all that role entails.
And while I really want to hear what you have to say – because you are so very important to me – I won’t be able to process it. Not at all. Heck, I probably won’t be able to stand in one place for long without falling asleep! Must keep moving.
My entire family misses out on a home cooked meal when I am utterly exhausted! I mean, do you think for one second that I am going to get behind a stove and start to whip up a lasagna from scratch? I don’t think so. It’s just not a reality. There is a direct correlation with sleepless nights and fast food.
Working out and an overall concern for my well-being? HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH Never in a million years.
A lot of what I do is very timely. Opportunities come in and I have to jump on the emails to grab them. If I wait too long, they are gone because brands need to move on initiatives fast! If I am having a hazy day – one where I am just floating through – sometimes my inbox suffers. I start stepping away from work responsibilities. When I do that, money starts flying out the door.
And I don’t mean to be rude, but nothing is worth the effort. None. Zilch. Nada. Not even your birthday. Yes, I’m talking to you. Sorry. The day is shot and it is mine to do over in my pajamas. A sleepless night ruins everything.
Can you relate to any of the above? I feel pretty confident that you are going to say “all of the above!” LOL! Well, look… I’m not just going to leave you hanging. There are ways to combat sleep deprivation! Here are a few tips to help you survive the night!
Ways To Beat Sleep Deprivation
- Avoid caffeine after noon.
- Keep the bedroom dark. Try blackout shades if possible.
- Keep the bedroom screen-free. Avoid stimulations at least an hour before bedtime.
- Keep the temperature cool: 65-68 degrees is the optimal sleep temp.
- Use a mattress that you trust
My family owns several Sleep Number® Mattresses. Even my children sleep on their Sleep IQ® Kids mattresses. A friend of mine, many moons ago, told me that a mattress is something we should all invest in. After all, we spend the majority of our day using one. If you think about it, we spend a third of our lives using this purchase – it better be a good one!
Personally, I love that fact that our Sleep Number beds are adjustable – meaning that the mattress can be altered to meet our very specific needs. If we need it to be firmer or softer, we simply use the app to make the change. I am a very light sleeper and I couldn’t land on just any old mattress. I needed one that would truly give me a great night’s sleep. So happy every night when I climb into bed! The Sleep Number bed contours to your neck, shoulders, back and hips, cushioning your entire body for more proper spinal alignment. In fact, 89% of study participants reported improved sleep quality on a Sleep Number bed. Makes complete sense to me because – while I didn’t participate in the study – I do feel the same exact way.
There’s even a way for you to track how restless you were in the night. The Sleep Number mattress and the app log any movement. This can give you a starting point to determine the cause. Did you drink too much caffeine? Did you have an overly stressful day? It’s not just about accepting sleep deprivation. It’s about being equipped with knowledge that enables you to make adjustments accordingly. I LOVE THIS!
And as an additional side note:
If you are a new blog reader, then you don’t know that I’ve been placed on bed rest for 5 months at a time with each of my children. It is the ultimate mattress test.
With my second child, I was actually hospitalized for two months. He was my bumpiest ride. However, with my third, the doctors told me that as long as I remained 100% in bed at home, I didn’t have to spend my time away from the kids. And I promised that I wouldn’t move an inch off of my mattress. WHICH I DIDN’T!
We spent so much time around our Sleep Number – I cannot tell you!! We ate every meal together on that mattress and I literally baked a baby until he was ready to meet the world as a full-term newborn. When I tell you that I understand the importance of a quality mattress, I mean it. When I needed to lift my head up to eat or to watch TV, it was just a click of a button away. When I was looking for a firmer base, again, the technology was at my fingertips. I don’t know what I would have done without this mattress in my bedroom. A true lifesaver.
